Test Sets for Vertex Cover Problems

چکیده
We describe the structure of the unique minimal test set T for a family of vertex cover problems. The set T corresponds to the Gröbner basis of the binomial ideal for the problem as described in [1]. While T has a surprisingly simple structure, in particular when the underlying graph is complete, it is NP -complete to decide whether the test set contains an improving element for a given feasible solution in the case of a complete graph

Approximation Algorithms for Partial Covering Problems (submission to Icalp 2001, Track A)
We study the generalization of covering problems to partial covering. Here we wish to cover only a desired number of elements, rather than covering all elements as in standard covering problems. For example , in k-set cover, we wish to choose a minimum number of sets to cover at least k elements. For k-set cover, if each element occurs in at most f sets, then we derive a primal-dual f-approxima...

We study dense instances of several covering problems An in stance of the set cover problem with m sets is dense if there is such that any element of the ground set X belongs to at least m sets We show that the dense set cover problem can be approximated with the performance ratio c log jX j for any c though it is unlikely to be NP hard A polynomial time approximation scheme is constructed for ...
متن کاملVertex Covers and Connected Vertex Covers in 3-connected Graphs
A vertex cover of a graph G=(V,E) is a subset N of V such that each element of E is incident upon some element of N, where V and E are the sets of vertices and of edges of G, respectively. A connected vertex cover of a graph G is a vertex cover of G such that the subgraph G[N] induced by N of G is connected. The minimum vertex cover problem (VCP) is the problem of finding a vertex cover of mini...

متن کاملParameterized Algorithms for Partial Cover Problems
Covering problems are fundamental classical problems in optimization, computer science and complexity theory. Typically an input to these problems is a family of sets over a finite universe and the goal is to cover the elements of the universe with as few sets of the family as possible. The variations of covering problems include well known problems like Set Cover, Vertex Cover, Dominating Set ...
